a note from the doctor
"The nervous system controls and coordinates ALL organs and structures of the human body" (Gray's Anatomy, 29th Ed. Pg 4)
Your body is made to recognize changes and adapt accordingly. When you enter into a hot room it recognizes the heat and activates the sweat glands to avoid high body temperature. If you eat a contaminated sandwich the body will recognize the poison and throw it out either through vomit or diarrhea. All these adaptations are controlled from a central place – THE NERVOUS SYSTEM. When the body has the ability to adapt to these changes it is said to be at ease, but when the ability to adapt to changes is disabled or 'messed up', it is called dis-ease (Disease). Make sure your nervous system is checked regularly to maintain 'ease' in your body for optimum functioning.

It will enhance your understanding of the coordination and communication that goes on in your body. It will also enlighten you on the essentials of care that will foster better health.
Let us take a brief scientific tour of your body and introduce you to chiropractic.
The brain is the relay station for the human body that controls all body functions. The brain which is encased within the cranium (skull) is a jelly-like tissue that is made up of billions of nerve cells. The nerve cells which are called neurons, have a central cell body and extensive thread-like branching network called axons and dendrites. These branching networks connect cells and make communication between cells and other parts of the body possible.
The brain material extends downwards as the spinal cord and is encased in the vertebral column (back bone/spine) The vertebral column is made up of 7 cervical (neck) vertebrae. There are 12 vertebrae in the thoracic region, and 5 in the lumbar area. These vertebrae are mobile hence make it easy for turning, bending, and moving. The sacrum and coccyx (tail bone) have 9 vertebrae which are fused together.
Vertebrae along the spinal column are stacked together, one upon the other. In-between the vertebrae, a pair of spinal nerves exit the spine and extent to different body areas or parts. These spinal nerves are formed by the spinal cord giving off a dorsal (back/posterior) and ventral (front/anterior) root branch. These nerve roots merge together before subdividing further as they exit the spine and spread to many areas of the body. Since the brain, spinal cord, and spinal nerves are made of the same material, communication is easily established.
However, communication becomes impaired and interrupted when vertebrae move away from their normal juxter position. They impinge on the nerves and blood vessels. This is referred to as a subluxation. Pressure on nerves interferes with function significantly. Nerve impulses do not reach their destinations as intended causing malfunction of body parts which results in disease most of the time.
Your chiropractor analyses your spine to locate subluxations. He identifies areas where the vertebrae have moved from their normal position causing impingement of nerves and blood vessels. He corrects these anomalies by administering appropriate adjustments to restore the vertebrae to their position. This alleviates the undue pressure on nerves and blood vessels. This subsequently restores the desired communication between the brain, spinal cord, and spinal nerves.
A body that is subluxated cannot function to its optimum. Imagine what happens when the brain sends neuronal messages to body organs which never receive them fully because the nerve pathway is convoluted and impinged. The body ends up with numerous musculoskeletal, systemic, and osseous difficulties.
Unfortunately, such difficulties characterize the lives of many people. As they seek help for their conditions, it is no myth to note that mostly, their signs and symptoms are addressed. It is needless to say that those conditions persist and incapacitate the body. True health is not restored until subluxations are corrected and nerve function restored.
Note that subluxations are not the only cause of disease in the body. On the other hand, a body that is free of subluxation has excellent nerve function. A high efficiency network of nerve communication expedites the healing process in case of any disease. This is because neurotransmitters and hormones are secreted as desired. They carry on normal communication from points of secretion to their destinations. Nutrients are carried and supplied in desired quantities to body cells. The body’s immunity is boosted and maintained leading to better chances of survival as diseases are fought.
Subluxations are silent nibblers. They deteriorate the body and limit function.
